Assoc Prof Gary Nielsen
Orthopaedic Surgeon
Associate Professor Nielsen MBBS FRACS CIME is a general orthopaedic surgeon with special interests in hip, knee and lower-limb surgery who currently practices privately in Brisbane. He has also completed several fellowships in orthopaedic traumatology.
He is the past State Chairman of the Australian Orthopaedic Association, and a current Tribunalist on the Workers’ Compensation Regulator’s Medical Assessments Tribunal (QLD).
Associate Professor Nielsen is passionate about medical education. He has a long association with the University of Queensland from his student days to now and is a past Chairman of Training for the AOA’s Queensland Orthopaedic Training Program. He is still active in clinical education and – in addition to his busy clinical practice, family life, and medico-legal schedule – Dr Nielsen is currently undertaking studies in Surgical Education to further his skills as a clinical educator.
Associate Professor Nielsen is Certified as an Independent Medical Examiner (ABIME) in AMA 5 and is a registered trained assessor in GEPI1 & GEPI2.
Outside of work, Associate Professor Nielsen loves hiking, cycling, golf, tennis and enjoys traveling with his family.
