Dr Michael McAuliffe

Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr Michael McAuliffe MBBS FRACS FA.Orth.A PhD is an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Brisbane. He obtained his PhD in 2021 which examined knee ligaments, how they are affected by osteoarthritis and knee replacement surgery, and the subsequent impact on patient outcomes.

Dr McAuliffe completed his orthopaedic training in Queensland in 2004. Following completion, he worked at the Adidas Sports Medicine Centre in Auckland and has also spent time visiting numerous orthopaedic centres around the world, which he finds interesting and thought provoking.

He has worked as the Deputy Director of Orthopaedics at the RBWH before being appointed the Director of Orthopaedics at the Ipswich General Hospital between 2006 and 2010.

In 2016, after being awarded the ABC Travelling fellowship, Dr McAuliffe spent five weeks travelling around major orthopaedic centres in the USA and Canada with a range of surgeons from the UK and South Africa, an experience which he says enhanced his overall outlook surrounding orthopaedics and what he can offer his patients.

Dr McAuliffe is a lower limb specialist who has a special interest in all knee surgeries and hip replacement surgeries. He welcomes medical negligence work for knee injuries only. He has an active interest in orthopaedic trauma and is one of the founding surgeons of AccessOrtho, an acute orthopaedic injuries clinic.

Outside of his busy clinical work Dr McAuliffe and his family devote time to fundraising for Tour de Cure and cancer research. He has been a team leader for surgical aid teams (Orthopaedic Outreach) in the Fiji islands since 2008 and a junior rugby coach.
